Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our services, scheduling, service areas, and what to expect when you hire Montana Home Services.
Services & Scope
What handyman services do you offer in Bozeman?
We offer a wide range of interior and exterior home services throughout Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley. On the interior: drywall repair, painting, flooring, door and window repair, trim work, and plumbing fixture replacement. On the exterior: deck repair and staining, fence installation and repair, gutter cleaning, power washing, exterior painting, and heat tape installation. Seasonal services include snow removal, sprinkler startup, and pre-winter exterior prep. We also offer landscape and lawn care, property maintenance programs for landlords and rental owners, commercial handyman services, and post-construction exterior cleanup. See our full Services page for the complete list.
What is the difference between a handyman and a general contractor?
A handyman handles a wide variety of smaller repairs, maintenance tasks, and moderate improvement projects — typically jobs that can be completed in a day or less. A general contractor manages larger construction projects, pulls permits, coordinates multiple licensed trades (electricians, plumbers, HVAC), and oversees new builds or major structural renovations.
For drywall repair, painting, deck repair, fence installation, gutter work, bathroom refreshes, flooring, and most home maintenance — a skilled handyman is the right call and costs significantly less than bringing in a GC. For structural additions, full kitchen remodels requiring permit work, or anything involving load-bearing changes, a licensed general contractor is appropriate.
Do you take small jobs, or is there a minimum project size?
We take small jobs. A single broken door hinge, a drywall hole that needs patching, a downspout that came loose — these are real problems that deserve a real solution. We don’t turn away small work. That said, if you have a list of small tasks, batching them into one visit is always more efficient and economical — it gets everything handled in one trip rather than scheduling multiple visits for individual items.
Do you handle commercial properties as well as residential?
Yes. We work with commercial property owners, property managers, and business owners throughout Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley. Commercial work includes tenant improvements, interior and exterior repairs, ongoing maintenance programs, and emergency response. See our Commercial Handyman page for more detail.
Scheduling & Estimates
How do I get an estimate?
Call or text us at (406) 439-4447, or fill out the form on our Get a Free Estimate page. For smaller or well-defined jobs — drywall patch, gutter cleaning, sprinkler blowout, a broken door — we can often provide a range over the phone. For larger or more complex projects — deck rebuild, fence installation, bathroom refresh, post-construction cleanup — we prefer a brief on-site walkthrough before giving a number. Estimates are free.
How far out are you typically booking?
Lead times vary by season. Spring and summer are the busiest periods — sprinkler startups and, gutter cleanings, deck staining, and exterior prep all cluster in those windows, and we may book one to three weeks out during peak season. Winter is typically more available for interior work. For urgent issues, call or text us directly — we do our best to accommodate time-sensitive repairs.
What should I do if I have a handyman emergency?
Call or text us directly at (406) 439-4447. For urgent situations — a door that won’t lock, an active leak that needs attention, or storm damage that needs addressing before more weather hits — calling or texting is always faster than the contact form. We do our best to respond quickly and fit true emergencies into the schedule.
How should I prepare for a handyman visit?
Clear reasonable access to the work area — move furniture away from walls if drywall work is planned, make sure vehicles are out of the driveway if exterior pressure washing is scheduled. Have a complete list of everything you want addressed so we can work efficiently through the full scope in one visit. If you have specific materials in mind (paint color, fixture model, flooring type), have those details ready or purchased ahead of time. If you’re unsure about materials, we’re happy to advise during the visit or estimate call.
Do you work on weekends?
Weekend availability varies by season and current booking. Contact us to ask about weekend scheduling — we work with clients to find times that fit their situation where we can.
Service Areas
What areas do you serve?
We serve Bozeman, Big Sky, Belgrade, Four Corners, Manhattan, Three Forks, Livingston, and Gallatin Gateway. We do not charge travel premiums or trip minimums for communities outside Bozeman — clients in Belgrade, Four Corners, or Livingston are served the same as Bozeman clients. See our Service Areas page for more detail on each community.
Do you serve Big Sky, MT? Is there an extra charge?
Yes, we regularly service Big Sky — vacation homes, ski condos, and rental properties throughout Mountain Village and Meadow Village. We do not charge an 8-hour day minimum for Big Sky visits. Some other Bozeman handyman companies enforce a full-day charge just to show up in Big Sky — we don’t. You pay for the work performed. See our Big Sky Services page for full detail.
Do you serve Belgrade, MT?
Yes. Belgrade is one of the fastest-growing communities in the Gallatin Valley and we serve it regularly — home repair, interior and exterior work, fencing, lawn care, and commercial maintenance. See our Belgrade Services page for more.
Seasonal Services
When should I winterize my sprinkler system in Bozeman?
Mid-to-late September is the safe window — before Bozeman’s first hard freeze, which can arrive as early as early September in some years. Waiting until October is often fine but carries more risk. Any water left in underground irrigation lines when a hard freeze arrives will expand and crack the pipe, requiring excavation and repair in spring. Book your blowout in September to be safe. See our Sprinkler Repair page for full detail.
When should gutters be cleaned in Bozeman?
Twice a year for most Bozeman homes: once in late October or early November after leaves have finished dropping, and again in April or May after snowmelt. The fall cleaning is the more critical of the two — clogged gutters going into winter are one of the primary causes of ice dam formation in Bozeman, which leads to water intrusion, fascia rot, and interior damage. Homes near cottonwood corridors or with heavy tree canopy may benefit from a third cleaning in early fall. See our Gutter Cleaning page for more.
What causes ice dams in Bozeman, and how can they be prevented?
Ice dams form when heat escaping through the roof melts snow, which then flows down to the cold eave and refreezes — a cycle worsened by clogged gutters that can’t drain meltwater. The two most effective preventive measures are: (1) fall gutter cleaning, so meltwater can drain freely through the gutter system, and (2) heat tape installation along vulnerable roof edges and gutters, which keeps a channel open through freeze-thaw cycles. Neither eliminates ice dam risk entirely — insulation and ventilation are the long-term structural solutions — but both significantly reduce it season to season. See our Heat Tape page.
Do you offer snow removal in Bozeman?
Yes. We offer snow removal for driveways, walkways, decks, and roofs — we focus on one-time service not long-term contracts. Call us when you need us. Big Sky vacation properties are a significant part of our snow removal work. See our Snow Removal page for detail on service scope.
What exterior maintenance should Bozeman homeowners do every fall?
The four most important fall exterior tasks for Bozeman homes: (1) Gutter cleaning after leaves have finished dropping — prevents ice dam formation all winter. (2) Sprinkler blowout before the first hard freeze — prevents cracked irrigation lines. (3) Heat tape installation or inspection on vulnerable roof edges and pipe runs — protects against ice dams and pipe freeze. (4) Deck inspection — identify loose boards, failing fasteners, or railing issues before snow loads arrive and make them worse. All four of these can often be addressed in coordinated fall visits.
Property Maintenance & Vacation Homes
Do you offer property maintenance programs for landlords?
Yes. We offer ongoing property maintenance programs for landlords, property managers, and vacation rental owners throughout the Gallatin Valley. These programs cover scheduled seasonal tasks — gutter cleaning, sprinkler startup and blowout, snow removal, exterior inspection — plus responsive repair work as issues come up. Rental property owners who want their maintenance handled without tracking every task themselves are a core part of our client base. See our Property Maintenance page.
Can you manage my vacation property if I live out of state?
Yes. We work with many out-of-state owners of Big Sky vacation properties and Bozeman rental homes who need a reliable local contact to handle seasonal maintenance, respond to repair issues, and keep the property in good condition between visits. We communicate by phone, text, and email, provide photos of completed work, and can coordinate with property managers or short-term rental management companies. You don’t need to be on-site for us to take care of the property.
What maintenance does a Big Sky vacation home need through the year?
Big Sky vacation properties have a specific seasonal maintenance calendar driven by ski season and mountain weather. The key annual touchpoints: Fall (September–October) — gutter cleaning, sprinkler blowout, heat tape installation or inspection, deck inspection before snow load season. Pre-ski season (November) — exterior condition check, confirm snow removal service is in place. Spring (April–May) — post-snowmelt gutter cleaning, deck inspection for winter damage, sprinkler startup, exterior surface inspection. Summer — any deferred repair work, staining, painting, or improvement projects. See our Big Sky Services page for full detail.
